The Water Board works, thanks to you

The Netherlands lives with water. Sometimes it is too dirty, sometimes there is too much of it, and then again sometimes too little. De Dommel Water Board has been involved for many years in guarding the quality of the surface water, and managing water levels in the areas where we live and work. By deliberately allowing rivers more room to flow, or even overflow naturally, we avoid flooding in our villages and towns. Regulating water levels is also of essential importance to our agriculture and recreation sectors. The areas in Brabant that have a sandy soil suffer from a shortage of water. We are reducing that shortage by holding water longer in certain areas in the region.

Working together for water, De Dommel Water Board

De Dommel Water Board is active throughout the entire Dommel basin, from the Belgian border to Den Bosch, an area currently accommodating almost one million inhabitants. As a local authority, the Water Board is dependant on your tax contributions to enable it to carry on working on efficient water management. In short: The Water Board works, thanks to you

No need to worry, we will keep things dry

Maintaining streams and rivers in good repair ensures sufficient water drainage and ample supplies of nourishment for both plants and animals in the water environment. One of the ways in which the Water Board contributes to this is by mowing streambeds. As a measure against flooding in our towns and villages these streams and rivers are deliberately allowed enough room to overflow naturally at specified locations. Water levels can cause problems at times. Dealing with these problems is the domain of the municipal authorities. The provincial authorities and the Water Board are closely involved in providing the necessary solutions.

Sufficient water for every need

By regulating the water levels in rivers and streams we can ensure that nature reserves and agricultural areas have a sufficient water supply. We employ various methods for retaining water in these areas, such as dams, allowing rivers to meander in a natural fashion, or raising riverbeds.

It is wonderful that the water is getting increasingly cleaner

It is in everybodys interest that plants and animals can continue to live in our waters. That is why the Water Board gives nature a helping hand by cleaning streams and rivers. The water Board is regularly involved in removing waste from our rivers and streams. This is sadly necessary as inhabitants and visitors throw an annual average of 350 tons of (household) waste, including bicycles, car tyres, furniture, and even cadavers, into the water. In addition to providing this helping hand we also allow streams to meander just as they did in the past, and by creating differences in flow and volume in rivers, we see an increase in the variety of animals and plants in the river environment.

Wastewater is not wasted water

Household and industrial wastewater is processed at the nine sewage purification plants within the area under our management. An average of 110,000,000 m3 of wastewater is processed by these plants annually. After purification this water is discharged into a nearby stream or river. Together with the municipal authority, the Water Board is currently involved in determining the maximum volume of wastewater to be produced. This is also being done with companies. In addition to this we are involved with the Tilburgsche-Waterleiding-Maatschappij (Tilburg Water Supply Company) and the Municipal Authority of Tilburg, in the production of industrial water. This purified wastewater can be used by industry as water for extinguishing fires and for cooling and rinsing purposes. We also stimulate the disconnection of rainwater systems from the sewage system in new building projects. The rainwater is then channelled straight into the ground and no longer unnecessarily processed by sewage purification plants.

More and more people are taking to the water

The water Board considers a healthy balance between nature and (water) recreation to be of great importance. The Water Boards responsibility for safeguarding that balance includes tasks such as issuing sailing permits for canoeing etc.

Working with water

If you live on the water and you wish to make changes to the waterbed and/or embankment by for instance placing: art works, (divers, dams, etc.); or planting or carrying out (construction) works on the banks (within four meters of the surface water), contact us for the necessary permits.
